Johannesburg’s Saturday night jazz calendar continues on 25 July as Jazz at Jozi Gold welcomes one of South Africa’s most celebrated musical voices, Vusi Mahlasela.
The performance forms part of Jozi Gold’s ongoing weekly jazz programme, which has brought together established artists, leading instrumentalists and emerging voices for a series of Saturday night performances in Braamfontein.
Known internationally as The Voice, Mahlasela has spent more than three decades sharing songs rooted in hope, reconciliation, memory and humanity.
His career has taken him to stages around the world and has seen him perform alongside Sting, Paul Simon, Dave Matthews Band, Hugh Masekela and Angélique Kidjo. His music has also become closely connected to South Africa’s democratic story, earning him recognition as one of the country’s most important musical storytellers.
Audiences at Jozi Gold can expect material from Mahlasela’s extensive catalogue, alongside songs from his forthcoming album, Questions and Answers.
The performance follows recent appearances by Sydney Mavundla and Linda Sikhakhane, and continues a programme that is placing some of South Africa’s most respected musicians at the centre of Johannesburg’s Saturday night jazz calendar.
“What makes the series special is the range of artists and audiences it continues to bring together,” says Jozi Gold spokesperson Gynis Jardine. “Each Saturday offers a different expression of South African jazz, from established icons to artists shaping its future. Vusi Mahlasela is an important part of that story.”
The Saturday night series continues throughout August with performances by some of South Africa’s finest musicians, including Maleh, Keenan Ahrends, Abathwebuli Trio, Louis Mahlanga and Herbie Tsoaeli.
