PRESIDENT THABO MBEKI ATTENDS BETWAY PREMIERSHIP SOWETO DERBY

The Betway Premiership Soweto Derby is always a highlight on South Africa’s football calendar, and this year’s edition was made even more special by the esteemed presence of former South African President Thabo Mbeki.

The highly anticipated clash between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs took place on Saturday, 1 February, at FNB Stadium, drawing thousands of passionate supporters.

Among them was President Mbeki, a leader whose influence on South African football history remains profound.

Thirty-six years ago, in 1989, President Mbeki played a key role in South Africa’s readmission into the global football community.

Under his leadership, the nation’s reaffiliation with Fifa commenced—an era-defining moment that marked the country’s return to international football after years of isolation.

His presence at the Derby was a poignant reminder of the sacrifices he and his fellow liberators made for South Africa.

The nation will forever be grateful for their contributions, which shaped not only our democracy but also our ability to compete on the world football stage.

As fans celebrated the spectacle of one of Africa’s biggest football rivalries, they also had the opportunity to honour a leader whose legacy continues to inspire.
