South Africa Music Award-winning singer-songwriter Bongeziwe Mabandla releases his deeply personal new album, Ndingubani, a powerful and introspective body of work that explores identity, survival, heartbreak, healing, and hope.
Widely regarded as one of the most important voices in contemporary African music, Mabandla has built a career on transforming deeply personal experiences into songs that resonate across borders. On Ndingubani, he delivers his most vulnerable and revealing work to date, revisiting different chapters of his life while confronting some of the questions that have shaped his journey.
Translated as “Who Am I?”, Ndingubani is less concerned with finding a definitive answer than embracing the ongoing process of becoming.
Written during periods of uncertainty, reflection, and personal transformation, the album traces Mabandla’s experiences of leaving home, searching for belonging, navigating mental health challenges, confronting betrayal, wrestling with ambition, and learning to accept himself more fully. Drawing from memories of his upbringing in the Eastern Cape as well as the emotional realities of adulthood, the project unfolds as a deeply human portrait of resilience.
“A lot of these songs were born from difficult moments,” says Mabandla. “Some came from memories of growing up in the Eastern Cape, others from experiences of illness, loneliness, pressure, love, addiction, and the emotional cost of chasing dreams. Even though many of the themes are heavy, the album is ultimately my own testament to hope and resilience.”

Musically, Ndingubani expands Mabandla’s signature blend of folk-inspired songwriting and contemporary African soundscapes. The album draws inspiration from theatre, spiritual music, and storytelling traditions, creating a rich emotional landscape that allows each song to inhabit its own world.
Tracks such as Walila showcase Mabandla’s gift for theatrical storytelling and humour, while songs like Ndikhulule (Depression) and Ukuyeka confront vulnerability, trauma, and healing with striking honesty. Elsewhere, Zama and A.M.L reflect on the restless pursuit of purpose across different places and stages of life, capturing the sacrifices and uncertainty that often accompany personal growth.
At the heart of the album sits Libambe Ligatshoni, a powerful meditation on perseverance that became a spiritual anchor for the project. The song embodies one of the album’s central themes: holding onto hope even when the destination remains unclear.
Ndingubani is also rich with personal tributes. Yalwa honours the strength, sacrifices, and unconditional love of mothers, while Mganwam celebrates friendship and loyalty. On Ndinje, Mabandla is joined by acclaimed Cameroonian artist Blick Bassy for a moving reflection on self-acceptance and embracing the parts of ourselves we once struggled to understand.
Across its 18tracks, Ndingubani finds Bongeziwe Mabandla at his most courageous, inviting listeners into moments of doubt, pain, joy, and triumph while offering a reminder that growth is rarely linear.
Rather than presenting a neatly packaged conclusion, Ndingubani embraces the beauty and complexity of the journey itself. It is an album about becoming, about finding strength in uncertainty, and about choosing hope even when the answers remain out of reach.
With Ndingubani, Bongeziwe Mabandla delivers a defining statement from an artist continuing to push the boundaries of contemporary African music while remaining deeply rooted in honesty, vulnerability, and human connection.
