Langelihle Phili‘s opener was made 1-1 by Cassius Mailula after the head of the Mamelodi Sundowns to make drew 1-1 in the Betway Premiership at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
Phili — a recent signing from Stellenbosch — netted the opening goal for Chiefs shortly after the hour-mark. Cassius Mailula, who is back for a second stint at Mamelodi Sundowns after a whirlwind spell abroad with stops at Toronto FC, Wydad Casablanca and Kortrijk, cancelled it out with a header right after coming on with around 15 minutes left to play.
Heading into the game, these were the only two teams in the Premiership who had yet to drop points. Now, there are no unblemished teams left. Kaizer Chiefs remain top of the league for the moment with seven points from three games, while African champions Sundowns have four Points from two.games
To register his first goal for Kaizer Chiefs in a high-stakes clash against another giant of the domestic and continental game is particularly pleasing for Phili, who explains, “Obviously, being at such a great football institution as Kaizer Chiefs you want to play in the big games, so being able to play and score against Mamelodi Sundowns, the African champions, was huge for me, as could be seen from my celebration.”
