Tuks vs Kovsies is a battle to remain unbeaten in Varsity Football

It is easy to predict that before the ball is kicked, even once in tomorrow’s Varsity Football clash between Tuks and Kovsies in Bloemfontein, it will be a humdinger.

They are the two in-form teams in local varsity football at the moment. In December, they contested the USSA final. Tuks had to come back from 1-defecit to win 2–1.

As things stand at the moment, after three rounds of Varsity Football, Tuks and Kovsies top the log with seven points. Both are still unbeaten. Tuks, however, have a better goal difference and scored one more goal.

As one of the Tuks’s “elder statesmen”, Atlegang Masemala is not fooled by statistics or past results.

“Football at the University of the Free State is experiencing their ‘golden era’. They have a good squad of players and should be seen as one of the ‘bigger’ teams of the tournament. They have a hunger to be the best. So tomorrow is not going to be an easy game. Those are the games you want to play. A top-of-the-table clash. So, we’re excited to play in Bloemfontein and showcase what we can do.”

As to last week’s game against Northwest, which ended in a goalless draw, Masemala said, ” I think we needed to be more patient. Keep recycling the ball and wait for the right moment to penetrate.”

He debuted for Tuks in 2022. From a playing perspective, this season has been frustrating.

“I have been sidelined for six months due to an injury, but I was not going to miss out on playing Varsity football, so I was very diligent with my rehab. So, yeah, I am back and playing for about two months. I’m feeling good physically and mentally. Obviously, I’m playing less now due to my lack of ‘rhythm’, but, you know, the team comes first.

“All that matters is to be part of the team and make a difference. Whether that’s on the field playing or motivating my teammates before the game or off the pitch. I will do anything to make sure the boys are ready. I want to give them the same support I get when I play.”

As to his best traits when playing, Masemala said, “I think I’ll bring a lot of calmness. I’m one of the most comfortable players on the ball. My strong points are keeping position and recycling the ball.

“Now, thinking of it, if I should come on to play in a situation where we as a team are with our backs against the wall, I will use my experience from 2022 to slow the game down and maintain position of the ball to make sure the game is heading in our direction,” explained Masemala who is doing is BA in Humanities.

Kickoff for tomorrow’s game in Bloemfontein is at 19:15.
