Artist, rapper, and singer-songwriter Mthabisi ‘Eugene’ Ngwenya, better known as JENEDIK, has released a brand-new kwaito-inspired track titled “Tholakala.” Evoking the nostalgia of the golden era when kwaito music reigned supreme in South Africa, ‘Tholakala’ features Indian rising star PRIVZ, making this vibrant single a unique collaboration and display of South Africa’s rich heritage.
“‘Tholakala’ is a track I wrote to bring back the love for kwaito music. Yes, we have amapiano now, and it’s doing really well, but I miss hearing that old school kwaito music, which inspired me to write the song,” says JENEDIK.

“I really wanted my fans to have that feeling of nostalgia from the kwaito era. In isiZulu, we say ‘ungikhumbuza ezamuzukwana,’ which translates to ‘you remind me of the good old days,’ and this is exactly what I wanted my fans to remember. That era of Isipantsula, wearing white sneakers and bucket hats while having amaSkopas” adds Jenedik.
Inspired by South African kwaito legends and having experienced the rich culture of various townships in mzansi, Jenedik lists the likes of Trompies, Tkzee, Zola 7, the late M’du, and Mandoza as some of his greatest influences in music.
Looking to the future, he hopes to reignite fans’ love for kwaito music while also tapping into new-age genres such as amapiano and afro-tech music through meaningful collaborations.
