The City of Johannesburg Health Department has hailed the recent visit of the Transnet Phelophepa healthcare train, affectionately known as the “Train of Hope”, as a resounding success.
Stationed at Dube station last week, the Phelophepa train was inundated with residents from across Soweto eager to access its vital health services. “We were overwhelmed by the demand for the train’s services,” said MMC Cllr Ennie Makhafola. “It was clear that there’s a huge need for healthcare in our communities.”
The Phelophepa train brings primary healthcare services right to the doorstep of those who need them most, aligning with the City’s commitment to improving access to healthcare in townships, informal settlements, and hostels.
Offering a range of services including eye care, dental care, general health check-ups, mental health support, and pharmacy services, the train also plays a crucial role in health education. While most services are free, some items like prescription glasses and certain medications come at a nominal fee.
Last year, over 2 000 Soweto residents benefited from the Phelophepa train, with hundreds receiving treatment for eye care, general health issues, and dental problems. Since its launch, the train has provided healthcare to millions of South Africans, conducted countless health screenings, and educated communities about HIV/Aids and other health concerns.
The Phelophepa initiative has also been instrumental in training healthcare professionals, with thousands of doctors, pharmacists, and nurses gaining valuable experience on board the train.
