South African singer-songwriter Nhoza (Unolali) returns with “Umthandazo”, a deeply personal single inspired by life’s everyday struggles and the unwavering hope that carries us through our most challenging moments. More than a song, the release is an intimate expression of faith, vulnerability and perseverance, with Nhoza transforming a personal prayer into a message of hope for anyone navigating difficult seasons in their life.
Written during one of her most vulnerable moments, “Umthandazo” emerged from a place of uncertainty, when Nhoza found herself searching for the strength to overcome the challenges before her. What began as a prayer for her own circumstances soon became something greater: a song she hopes will offer comfort, encouragement and renewed hope to others facing their own battles.
“Umthandazo is not just a song, it’s a prayer,” says Nhoza. “When I wrote that prayer in my most vulnerable moment, I knew something was about to change. I had hope that it would be a prayer that not only pulls me out of the dark, but gives hope to many others too.”
Musically, the single reflects Nhoza’s distinctive approach to sound, which she describes as traditional fusion. Drawing from African jazz, blues, funk and gospel, she brings together a diverse range of influences to create music that resists the limitations of a single genre. This fluidity allows her to explore the emotional depth of her experiences while remaining rooted in the sounds that have shaped her artistic identity.

Born in eXhukwane Location in Debe Neck, in the Eastern Cape, just outside eQonce, Nhoza’s relationship with music began in childhood. Her mother, a singer and vocal coach who was involved in a cappella groups, played a significant role in nurturing her love for singing. After moving to Cape Town, where she spent several years in Langa, Nhoza’s appreciation for jazz, blues and live music deepened, broadening her understanding of the possibilities within the music industry.
With more than two decades in the industry, Nhoza has continued to pursue her craft through its challenges and triumphs. Her journey is also a testament to the possibilities that exist for young women from rural communities who dare to pursue their dreams.
“I’m literally living my wildest dreams while proving to many village girls that it’s possible,” she shares.
Her most recent solo milestone came with the release of “Andiyazi” last year, a collaboration that received a positive response locally and internationally, opening new doors in her career. Nhoza credits Rich for bringing the collaboration to life and placing his trust in her. The single was accompanied by an official music video filmed in Langa, a community that holds special significance in her personal and artistic journey. The release marked a breakthrough for Nhoza’s solo career, following her previous project, Black South Easter.
Inspired by legendary artists including Letta Mbulu, Stompie Mavi, Busi Mhlongo and Etta James, Nhoza continues to draw from a rich musical heritage while carving out a sound of her own. She hopes to collaborate with Thandiswa Mazwai, Asa, Goldfish, Nathi Mankayi and Internet-Athi in the future.
“Umthandazo” also signals the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the singer-songwriter. Her forthcoming EP, Oluhambo (“The Journey”), will offer listeners a deeper understanding of her musical evolution and the experiences that continue to shape her artistry. In keeping with her appreciation for the enduring value of physical music, the project is set to be released on digital platforms, CD and vinyl. Nhoza also hopes to embark on a tour in 2027.
