Soweto Amapiano and Afro House duo Ama Top Dawgz release their latest single and music video, “Khuthaza Abafwethu,” meaning “Encourage Our Brothers,” an uplifting anthem inspired by the everyday struggles, resilience and ambition of people in ekasi. Rooted in their experiences of Soweto and Protea Glen, the single speaks to anyone navigating difficult circumstances while continuing to chase their dreams. The release arrives ahead of their six-track EP, “2BDI1R (2 Big Dogs In 1 Room),” dropping on 11 September.
“Khuthaza Abafwethu came from watching our brothers, our friends and people in the kasi going through hard times. We wanted to make something that reminds them to keep pushing and not give up,” the duo explains. Blending vibrant Amapiano and Afro House with the unmistakable energy of Soweto street culture, the song transforms the realities of township life into an uplifting soundtrack for anyone hustling towards something better.
That message is deeply personal for Ndibzar, whose relationship with music began long before the formation of Ama Top Dawgz. Raised in Protea Glen by a single mother and his grandparents, he remembers discovering his ability to create music as a child: “I remember back in 2012, at my grandfather’s two-room house, making a song about it, using a bucket for drums and my grandma’s phone to record. I’ve always wanted to sing for the world, and I won’t stop until I reach out.”
His fellow Ama Top Dawgz member Lendas, grew up in Diepkloof, Soweto, before relocating to Protea Glen at 13. After initially dreaming of a life in football, music found him through freestyle sessions during school lunch breaks — experiences that would eventually shape the sound of a duo determined to turn their surroundings into art.
“Our music comes directly from the street culture and hustle of Soweto. We take what we see and experience every day in the township and turn it into music that can make you move, but also make you feel motivated,” they say.
Following their early project “Sesfikile” and single “Phambili,” which received great radio support, Ama Top Dawgz are now entering a new chapter with Thumaka Music. Their six-track EP, “2BDI1R (2 Big Dogs In 1 Room),” drops on 11 September, featuring their sole collaboration with Boontle RSA on “Icilongo.”
With ambitions extending beyond music into film and other creative projects, the duo’s philosophy remains clear: “We want to create art that lasts forever — more music, more movies and more fun.”
