The Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts, Culture, and Recreation (SACR) of the Gauteng
Provincial Legislature (GPL) is deeply saddened by the passing of Presley Chweneyagae, one of
South Africa’s most celebrated and talented actors.
Reports on Tuesday, 27 May 2025, confirmed that the beloved actor, best known for his
Academy Award-winning performance in the 2005 film Tsotsi, passed away after a brief illness.
Chweneyagae, affectionately known as “Cobrizi wa le Easy” by his fans, a nod to his iconic role
in the hit series The River, leaves behind an enduring legacy as one of the finest actors to grace
South African screens and stages.
Honourable Disebo Tlebere, Chairperson of the Committee, expressed her grief, “Our winter
has just become colder. The news of Presley Chweneyagae’s passing has come as a profound
shock, as we had hoped to witness his brilliance for many more years. South Africa, the African
continent, and the global arts community have lost a shining star. We extend our deepest
condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. Rest easy, Cobrizi.”
