As South Africa commemorates Youth Month, Engen proudly reaffirms its long-standing commitment to empowering young people through strategic investments in education and sport—creating meaningful opportunities for the nation’s future leaders.
For over four decades, the Engen Maths & Science Schools programme has supported learners across the country, equipping them with essential skills in these critical subjects. This unwavering commitment to education is complemented by Engen’s deep investment in youth sport development, most notably through the 23-year-old Engen Knockout Challenge South Africa’s largest and most prestigious youth football tournament.
The tournament has become a vital platform for discovering and nurturing talent, offering both young male and female footballers invaluable exposure and experience, and opening pathways to professional careers. This year’s edition carries extra significance following the historic triumph of South Africa’s U20 national football team, Amajita, who were crowned champions of the CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations. Several players in the squad including Gomolemo Kekana, who scored the winning goal in the final traced their roots to the Engen Knockout Challenge, highlighting the tournament’s critical role in shaping the next generation of football stars.
Tsholo Tiro, Engen’s Brand and Sponsorship Manager, emphasizes the importance of sustained youth investment:
“Youth Month is a timely reminder of our responsibility to support South Africa’s young talent. The success of Amajita at AFCON and the continued impact of our Maths & Science Schools programme show the value of investing in meaningful platforms. Engen remains committed to these initiatives, confident that empowering youth today lays the foundation for a stronger nation tomorrow.”
Beyond the pitch, Engen also champions skills development in sports media. Last year’s Sportscaster Competition winner, Princess Mobeng, will travel across provinces during this year’s Engen Knockout Challenge, sharpening her broadcasting skills under the guidance of seasoned mentors—part of Engen’s broader initiative to nurture careers in sports media.
Engen’s dedication to sport development is further demonstrated through its continued support of SA Rugby’s ‘Get Into Rugby’ programme, which focuses on grassroots rugby development nationwide. This initiative is bolstered by Engen’s collaboration with rugby icons Siya Kolisi, Eben Etzebeth, Cheslin Kolbe, and Tendai “Beast” Mtawarira, who serve as brand ambassadors and advocates for social upliftment through sport.
As the Engen Knockout Challenge makes its way through various provinces—culminating in the highly anticipated Engen Champ of Champs finals at the High-Performance Centre in Pretoria this October—Engen’s holistic approach to youth empowerment stands out. Whether through education, sport, or media development, the company remains deeply committed to building a brighter future.
This Youth Month, Engen proudly reiterates its mission: to inspire, uplift, and empower South Africa’s youth by creating platforms where talent—both male and female—can grow, and where tomorrow’s leaders, athletes, and professionals can take their first steps toward greatness.
