Born in Mamelodi, Pretoria, Laka is globally celebrated for his ability to fuse jazz with South African genres such as kwaito, kwela and marabi — a groundbreaking blend he formalised as kwaai‑jazz. His deep technical foundations, including earning Grade 8 in classical guitar from the Royal Academy of Music and building a reputation as a virtuoso pianist and arranger, underpin a career that has shaped multiple generations of artists.

Across more than 800 registered songs and numerous platinum‑selling albums such as Destiny, Supernova, Pyramid, and Paradise amongst others, Laka has been central to the development of South Africa’s contemporary sound.

Don Laka’s collaborations span Brenda Fassie, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Rebecca Malope, Sankomota and many more, while his 2013 Grammy nomination for producing Hugh Masekela’s Jabulani remains a milestone moment in South African jazz’s global recognition.

His influence extends beyond performance; as co‑founder of Kalawa Jazmee, Laka helped shape the rise of kwaito and cemented one of South Africa’s most significant Black-owned music labels.

As he begins this new chapter with Sony Music Entertainment Africa, Laka also confirms that new music is set for release in 2026 — a body of work that seamlessly blends his rich heritage with fresh innovation and a new generation of collaborators.
