CHIPPA REACHED TOP8

Chippa United climbed into the top eight as they continued their good run of form with a 2-0 victory over SuperSport United at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium on Saturday, April 20.

Thabo September and Kwanele Kopo’s side leapfrogged Kaizer Chiefs and Golden Arrows into eighth position courtesy of their third win on the spin in the DStv Premiership. Matsatsantsa remain without a win in 2024 and they are now five points adrift of the CAF Champions League places in fifth spot.

SuperSport were desperate to snap an eight-match winless streak in the league stretching back to December 30, although they had lost just one of their last five games.

Chippa looked to build on back-to-back 2-0 wins against Cape Town Spurs and Kaizer Chiefs earlier this month which had taken them within a point of the top eight ahead of the weekend’s fixtures.

The hosts made a bright start and Gamphani Lungu tested Stanley Nwabali with a shot on 14 minutes that the Nigerian goalkeeper turned behind for a corner.

But, as has been the case so often recently, Gavin Hunt’s side fell behind when Sinoxolo Kwayiba fired past Washington Arubi in the 33rd minute to register his third goal in three outings.

The visitors took their slender lead into the halftime interval and they remained resolute at the back in the second 45 minutes as the opposition went in search of an equaliser.

Hunt used his full quota of substitutions in a bid to swing the contest in his team’s favour, but instead it was Chippa who scored with 10 minutes remaining when Bienvenu Eva Nga beat Arubi to bag his second goal in two games.

Substitute Etiosa Ighodaro was presented with a late chance to pull one back for the Tshwane giants, only to be denied by Nwabali, who managed to keep a third consecutive clean sheet.

Matsatsantsa travel to the Peter Mokaba Stadium for a clash with Kaizer Chiefs next up on April 27, while the Chilli Boys are also away to AmaZulu at the Moses Mabhida Stadium earlier that same day.
