JOHANNESBURG SCREENING

The award-winning film Fight Like A Girl, written and directed by Matthew Leutwyler, executive produced by Colin F. Gayle and Serge Ibaka, and produced by Anton Laines and Yvette Davis Gayle, has been making its way around the globe. The feature film stars Ama Qamata (who also receives her first co-producer credit) and Hakeem Kae-Kazim (Black Sails, Pirates of the Caribbean, Godzilla Vs. Kong ) and has garnered awards and critical acclaim from Nigeria to India and Los Angeles. Last week, the film was screened in Johannesburg, where it previously won Best Film at the South African Independent Film Festival. Following the screening, there was an engaging Q&A moderated by Nomndemi Mdaki.

The film tells the gripping, true-life story of a young Congolese woman who is forced to work in an illegal mineral mine. After a daring escape, she discovers a new purpose by joining a renowned all-women boxing club in Goma, a border city in the Democratic Republic of Congo. What makes Fight Like A Girl even more remarkable is that many of the real-life women from the actual boxing club play supporting roles in the film, bringing an authenticity and raw energy to this groundbreaking story. It also holds the distinction of being the first Western narrative film shot entirely in the DRC.

With its gripping storyline, stellar performances, and impactful social message, Fight Like A Girl is a must-see film that’s leaving an indelible mark on the global cinematic landscape.
