Almost 12 million men are affected by erectile dysfunction in South Africa

With World Heart Day taking place on the 29th of September, the topic of heart health is high on the awareness agenda with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), prevention, and the importance of maintaining heart health in focus. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is an important part of this conversation, says Dr Bradley Wagemaker, Medical Director at Lamelle Pharmaceuticals.

“There is an abundance of studies that point to the reality of ED being a precursor and even an indicator of heart health problems for men,” says Wagemaker. “Both the heart and the penis rely on proper blood circulation to function, and conditions that damage blood vessels, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, can negatively impact heart health and sexual function.”

In short, the same conditions that negatively impact heart health can cause erectile dysfunction. And while ED isn’t always an indicator of an underlying heart issue,  research suggests that men with ED who have not experienced trauma  and who may not even be displaying symptoms of heart problems, should first undergo heart disease screening.

“Traditionally, the focus was on atherosclerosis – the buildup of plaque in the arteries as the main reason ED often precedes heart issues. It was thought that restricted blood flow due to plaque buildup hindered erections,” says Wagemaker. “However, experts now emphasise that the real culprit is often a dysfunction of the inner lining of blood vessels, which leads to the inadequate blood supply to both the heart and the penis, worsening cardiovascular health and contributing to ED.”

The importance of a healthy lifestyle

While proper diet and exercise are likely the most common pieces of advice medical practitioners provide to patients with heart conditions, it’s worth emphasising that adopting a healthy lifestyle is crucial for improving both heart health and ED.

Regular exercise, a balanced diet and maintaining a healthy weight can result in drastic improvements alone. Men should also consider routine check-ups to monitor blood pressure, cholesterol, and other risk factors, ensuring proactive management of their heart health.

Doing away with smoking is also a great first step, as tobacco intake is known to damage blood vessels, which worsens heart health and erectile function. Quitting is crucial for recovery.

Supplements, such as Prelox Male Enhancement by Lamelle Pharmaceuticals, are an alternative over-the-counter and less invasive solution that some patients may opt to try before prescribed medical treatments. Prelox Male enhancement combines L-arginine and Pycnogenol (pine bark extract), which are known to enhance nitric oxide production, to assist in improving blood flow. Prelox specifically targets improved erectile function by boosting circulation, and some studies suggest it may help men with mild to moderate ED.

In fact, clinical trials have shown remarkable results, with improvements in erection quality reported as early as day one and participants experiencing a 78% increase in erection function in the first six months.

“Importantly, Prelox is safe, well-tolerated, and demonstrates increased effectiveness over time. Unlike quick-fix solutions, Prelox is a commitment to long-term health, offering men greater confidence in regaining normal erectile function,” says Wagemaker.

He adds that partners play an integral role in providing support in this journey, where married men or those in long-term relationships have better adherence to medical advice, including attending regular checkups and adopting healthier lifestyles when their partners actively support them.

“If you or your partner are experiencing symptoms of ED, it’s important to seek help. Understanding ED can alleviate anxiety and foster a more intimate connection, and I would encourage couples to discuss their feelings and explore treatment options together,” says Wagemaker.

As the world observes World Heart Day, it’s in the best interest of men of all ages and their partners to commit to prioritising heart health, not only for their well-being but also for fulfilling sex life.

A healthy heart is the cornerstone of overall health, enabling the enjoyment of every aspect of life, including intimacy.
