This episode spotlights 25-year-old middle-distance runner, Ryan Mphahlele, Ryan’s journey focuses on his middle-distance running prowess and his relentless quest for Olympic glory. Ryan also known as #KingRyan (the name Ryan means “little king) is well-known, and respected, for his unique style both on and off the track and his fearless approach to racing.

Ryan Mphahlele, a middle-distance runner from a conservative family in Tembisa, began his journey to the pinnacle of athletic achievement at an early age. Demonstrating exceptional talent and determination, he quickly became a standout athlete during his school years, excelling in track and field events.

Ryan maximized his potential at the University of Johannesburg, where he is currently a student. There, he honed his skills, balancing academia and athletic demands to forge the mindset and muscle necessary to transform potential into proof. His hard work paid off as he consistently delivered impressive performances in national competitions. Before long, he had garnered a reputation as one of the country’s most promising middle-distance runners.

Specializing in the 1500-meter events, Ryan’s athletic prowess is characterized by his exceptional speed, strategic race planning, and remarkable endurance. racing. His first breakthrough came in 2018 when he won the SA National Cross Country title in the 4km event. In 2022, the athlete clinched silver at the African Championships. This year he broke the SA road mile record placing third against many of the world’s best milers at the Adizero Road to Records. This milestone not only underscored his exceptional abilities but also positioned him as a formidable contender on the international stage

“I look at every win or loss as a lesson, I have also learned that it isn’t necessarily about how fast you run but about beating the other guys. I’m learning the importance of being competitive, which is hard because it requires me to step out of myself. I have also learned the importance of staying true to yourself and your beliefs,” reflects Ryan.
