Opening day delivers standout performances

 Day one of the 2026 Engen Knockout Challenge Johannesburg leg delivered exciting youth football, with Kaizer Chiefs, Kathorus Hyper Academy, Blue Birds Ladies and Mamelodi XI Stars producing standout performances. Their displays embodied this year’s theme, “Where Diski Legends Start,” reinforcing the tournament’s role in developing South Africa’s future football stars.

The Johannesburg leg got underway on Friday, 17 July, at Wits Marks Park Stadium, where teams began battling for early group-stage supremacy in pursuit of a place in the quarterfinals.

Kaizer Chiefs, coached by club legend David Mathebula, made a perfect start to their campaign with victories over DBK Football Stars (1-0) and Wits University (5-0) to top Group A. Kathorus Hyper Academy also won both of their opening matches, setting up a decisive Group A clash with Chiefs.

In Group B, Mamelodi Sundowns top the standings with four points, ahead of defending 2025 Engen Knockout Challenge Champions Panorama FC, who currently sit in third place with two points.

In the Under-20 girls’ section, Blue Birds Ladies and Mamelodi XI Stars were the standout performers on the opening day, winning both of their matches to finish top of their respective groups with six points.

Defending Under-20 girls’ champions University of Johannesburg won one match against Rosina Sedibane and drew with Mamelodi Sundowns FC to finish second in their group on four points.

The remaining group-stage fixtures will be contested on Saturday, with the final knockout places up for grabs. The tournament concludes on Sunday, 19 July, when the 2026 Engen Knockout Challenge Johannesburg champions will be crowned.
