58 MK Party member to be sworn in as National Assembly members

Zizi Kodwa remains resolute about his intention to be sworn in as a Member of Parliament, despite mounting calls for his removal.

The former Minister faces pressure from within the African National Congress (ANC) parliamentary caucus to step down amid allegations of bribery and corruption currently before the courts.

Having resigned as Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture following charges of allegedly accepting R1.7 million in kickbacks from a government supplier, Kodwa has since stepped down from his position on the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC). However, he remains determined to retain his seat in the National Assembly.

Despite calls both from within the party and externally for him to decline the position, Kodwa confirmed to Eyewitness News that he has completed his registration and expects to be sworn in this week. He shared a photograph of his newly issued parliamentary access card, standard for all 400 MPs.

While there has been criticism of Kodwa’s decision to return to Parliament, including condemnation from ActionSA’s parliamentary leader Athol Trollip, no formal ethics complaint has been lodged with Parliament.

Speaker Thoko Didiza is expected to administer the oath of office to Kodwa and other newly nominated members during the upcoming session.
