The countdown to the 7th Annual uMgungundlovu Film Festival themed Imagine the World in My Image has begun 

Pietermaritzburg, South Africa – The uMgungundlovu Film Festival (UFF) is proud to announce the countdown of its 7th edition, themed Imagine the World in My Image, taking place from 14th to 16th November 2025. The UFF promises to be an extraordinary celebration of film, diversity, and inclusivity.

“This year’s festival promises to be an exciting celebration of film and storytelling, with a diverse range of films, workshops, and industry events. I’m proud that the festival continues to be a pivotal initiative focused on empowering local filmmakers in historically marginalized communities, prioritising women, youth, people living with disabilities and LGBTQ+ Community,” said Portia Ndudane, Festival Founder. 

The uMgungundlovu Film Festival  will open with the powerful film by Jerome Moremi, The Unseen Voice, a story centred around a deaf woman, highlighting the importance of representation and inclusivity in the film industry.  As the festival constantly celebrates and empowers women, young talent, persons with disabilities and the LGBTQ Community, the opening night will further feature motivational talks by Women in Creation representative Gugu Mbogwa and uMgungundlovu LGBTQ+ film festival representative Neo Ndlela.  To ensure the youth always commit to careers in film and are guided accordingly, Dynamite Youth representative Zandile Radebe will render an inspirational speech, followed by the  uMgungundlovu Film Festival beneficiaries Sanele Mbambo,  Nkosiyomusa Ndlovu and Mzwandile Ntshele who will provide testimonies about the support they receive from the festival. 

Jam-packed with a dynamic and diverse programme featuring 33 films from 13 countries, showcasing the richness and depth of global storytelling, festival attendees will be spoilt for choice as they enjoy and learn from content from across the globe. The 16th of November will feature a range of workshops by industry professionals, designed to empower and educate emerging filmmakers. These includes Basic Script Writing Workshop, Basic Film Producer Workshop, Disability Inclusivity in Film Dialogue, Basic Marketing and Distribution Workshop, and LQBTQ+ Inclusivity Workshop.

Th festival will close with the screening of an inspiring story of resilience, empowerment, and the triumph of hope against all odds film, BOBO, written by Bruno Tanya and directed by Maurice Muendo. Set in the slums of Mathare, Nairobi, the film follows Bobo, an 18-year-old girl who enters a local modelling competition in a desperate attempt to save her family from a ruthless gangster threatening to seize their home. Outstanding filmmakers will be recognised and celebrated for their exceptional creativity, storytelling, and contribution to the film industry during the festival’s Awards Ceremony. 

Made possible through the support of the KZN Tourism and Film Authority, the uMgungundlovu Film Festival is a celebration of film and storytelling that aims to promote local filmmaking talent, provide a platform for emerging filmmakers, and showcase the best of international filmmaking. The festival is committed to promoting inclusivity and diversity in the film industry.
