Yaya Mavundla dazzles in a Gavin Rajah custom at SA Fashion Week,

Multi-award winning Transgender activist and brand ambassador Yaya Mavundla who is known for her activism and fashion and broke into mainstream audience through Mzansi Magic’s groundbreaking season one of Becoming continues to shine a spotlight on LGBTIQ+ issues in South Africa as she is set to star on SABC1’s Instaprenuers this Thursday with a twist.

Mavundla who is over the moon that her story is set to hit the free to air channel with a massive audience she is happy that she was not only able to get an opportunity to represent her community but she was able to share a part of a queer story as she believes representation is very important and it is even greater if it is done correctly and with respect too as mostly the community is shared in a dramatic and unrealistic manner and made caricature.

“When the producer and presenter of the show Sean McCollet reached out to me to be part of the show, I immediately thought of how I can make sure that whatever I show of myself on the show has to include queer content, at least 30% must be queer. I needed to make sure that it is not an opportunity missed for me to represent myself and my community well.” says Yaya.

“SABC is such a big platform, It was also important for me to be myself and also show people we are not a mockery and represent myself as a woman that I want everyone to see me as, and it always been my dream to do something big on SABC and hopefully this is the beginning of something great.” Mavundla concludes.

Speaking about having Yaya on the show Sean McCollet says he’s been a fan of Mavundla’s work for a while and it was important for him to feature Yaya on the season. “I’ve been a huge fan of Yaya Mavundla for a while now so when thinking of people to feature on the 2nd season, I had to have her. I wanted the viewers to see a glimpse of how she has built herself as a reputable brand in the entertainment industry, her inspiring story and her much continued success.” says McCollet who is a producer and presenter of the show.

The show has featured the likes of Mihlali Ndamase, Pamela Mntanga, Ryan Keys, Lungile Thabethe and many others. Catch Instaprenuers on SABC 1 on Thursdays at 18h00 and repeats on Tuesdays at 11h30.
