THE CITY BREAK CHIEFS HEARTS

Cape Town City emerged as 1-0 winners over Kaizer Chiefs in a DStv Premiership match played at the iconic FNB Stadium on Tuesday night.

The hard-fought victory elevated the Citizens to the fifth spot on the league standings and the Western Cape side will be looking to make it three wins in a row when they face Richards Bay on October 29.

Chiefs, on the other hand, slipped down to the seventh spot on the standings and they will determined to return to winning ways when they take on Lamontville Golden Arrows on October 28.

Amakhosi got off to a good start as they were able to get in behind the Citizens’ defence. Pule Mmodi burst into the visitors’ box from the left side and forced goalkeeper Darren Keet into making a low save in the 12th minute.

The City were able to weather the early storm and they surged forward in numbers in the 37th minute when Relebogile Mokhuoane set up Thabo Nodada who was denied by keeper Itumeleng Khune. The score was 0-0 at halftime.

Coach Eric Tinkler made changes prior to the start of the second-half and it was Darwin Gonzalez who made an impact. The Venezuelan attacker grabbed an assist when he set up Khanyisa Mayo who netted with a header to make it 1-0 to City in the 58th minute.

Chiefs then pushed for the equalising goal with Njabulo Ngcobo forcing Keet into making a save in the 72nd minute. Keet was a busy man as the lanky shot-stopper denied Keagan Dolly in the dying minutes to ensure that City claimed a 1-0 win.
