Madibane Secondary School crowned ET Radebe Tournament champions

Madibane Secondary School are the newly crowned football and netball champions of the ET Radebe School’s Tournament after impressively claiming both titles on Saturday, 2 September at the Diepkloof Sports Grounds in Soweto.

The sixth edition of the tournament, held under the ET Radebe Foundation which is a brainchild of former Bafana Bafana and Leeds United captain Lucas Radebe in memory of his late mother saw a total of eight schools competing in both football and netball divisions of the tournament.

In the football division of the competition, the newly crowned champions had to dig deep in all their fixtures – proving that the tournament is fast becoming one of the most competitive schools tournament in Johannesburg.

Their first assignment was against Matshidiso Secondary School where the match ended in a 0-0 stalemate, resulting in the match having to be decided on penalties which went 5-4 in favour of Madibane.

An even tougher assignment awaited them in the semi-finals after an evenly balanced match between them and Riverlea High School concluded with a highly-entertaining 1-1 draw, resulting in the match being decided on penalties which again went 8-7 in favour of Madibane.

In the finals of the tournament, it was yet another evenly tied encounter. This time against Seana Marena Secondary School where both sides had an equal number of chances to clinch the title but had to settle for a 1-1 stalemate which was decided on penalties in favour of Madibane.

Looking at the netball division, Madibane was just as dominant, having a clean sweep of all their matches to round if off in style with a 13-11 win in the final against Seana Marena to win the double.

Concluding what has been another resounding success of the ET Radebe Tournament, ET Radebe Foundation founder, Lucas Radebe thanked all the schools, partners and communities involved in ensuring that the tournament continues to be a success.

We want to thank all our stakeholders for making this tournament another resounding success as we continue playing our role in laying the building blocks to further identify and grow talent in both football and netball here in Soweto and surrounding areas.
