Gauteng ready to welcome the 2023 Netball World Cup Trophy  

For 5 days from 30 May to 03 June 2023, Gauteng will welcome the coveted 2023 Netball World Cup Trophy to its shores as it tours across the province.

Themed “Taking netball in Africa to a whole new level”, the Gauteng leg of the world cup trophy tour will make stops in all 5 regions of the province, known as the “Home of Champions”.

During the tour, the trophy will make its way to various communities throughout the Gauteng Province, including Townships, Informal Settlements and Hostels (TISH) areas.

It will arrive in Sedibeng (30 May) and travel to Johannesburg (31 May), the West Rand (01June) Tshwane (02 June) ending off in Ekurhuleni (03 June). During the travel, among others it will be presented to the Executive Mayors in the various Municipalities, the Premier of Gauteng, and whilst in Tshwane it will make a stop at the Union Buildings.

Celebrating that the Netball World Cup will take place on the African continent for the first time in Cape Town from 28 July to 06 August 2023, the trophy tour will drum up support from Gauteng citizens to rally behind SPAR Proteas who will be representing South Africa.

“It is of the upmost that we all come together to ensure the success of the Netball World Cup as it is hosted in our beloved country. Netball is a major sporting code for women globally and will contribute immensely towards the development of women in sport.

“As a world class hosting province and home of sporting and artistic excellence, Gauteng is thrilled to have the trophy among its people. We hope this will add in inspiring the team to go all the way knowing that South Africans have already laid their hands on it.  

“We are sending at least 50 young voices from various Gauteng schools to back the team and show support for the tournament.” says Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Ms Morakane Mosupyoe.
