A partnership between BIMA, Nando’s (sponsor of the Emerging Artist award category) and SAMRO (sponsor of the Songwriter of the Year award category), the Emerging Artist and Songwriter’s Workshop aims to foster a supportive and collaborative environment, allowing emerging musicians and songwriters to connect with like-minded individuals and establish invaluable industry connections. Participants will gain songwriting practical skills, explore release plans, imaging, music registration and royalty collection in an effort to inspire them to unlock their creative potential. Skye Wanda will deliver a performance as the recipient of the 2022 SAMRO Songwriter of the Year at the inaugural Basadi in Music Awards held in October 2022.

As an accomplished artist known for her soulful and captivating music, Msaki brings a wealth of experience and talent to the workshop. Her unique storytelling abilities and musical prowess have gained her local and international recognition. Now, she generously shares her knowledge and expertise with aspiring artists, offering invaluable insights into the art of songwriting. She will mentor the recipient of the SAMRO Songwriter of the Year award at the Basadi in Music Awards to be held in August 2023.

During the Nando’s Emerging Artist and SAMRO Songwriter’s Workshop, Msaki and a panel of industry experts, curated in partnership with Women In Music South Africa, will dive deep into the creative process, providing participants with practical guidance on crafting compelling lyrics, melody composition and innovative song arrangements. Attendees will be able to learn from their personal experiences, engage in interactive discussions, and receive constructive feedback on their work.

Msaki Says “I really believe that those of us who have a platform available should use our voices to make a positive impact, which is why I’m thrilled to be part of the Basadi in Music Awards, mentoring young women in the music industry through the songwriting workshop that Nando’s and SAMRO are sponsoring. I know how much it means to have someone invest time in you and to have people who will encourage you on this journey. I look forward to sharing what I’ve learnt and to being a small part of helping these talented young songwriters to find platforms of their own.”

Kirsty Niehaus, Nando’s Marketing Manager: Creativity Portfolio, says Nando’s believes that creativity changes lives. “Sponsoring the Emerging Artist of the Year category at BIMA and the songwriting workshop excites us at Nando’s because it ties in directly with our aim of nurturing and showcasing local talent in a way that makes a meaningful difference,” she says. “We look forward to hearing from some of South Africa’s hottest young musical talents.”

SAMRO CEO Annabell Lebethe “It was disheartening to learn that only approximately 18% of SAMRO members were female, as revealed in a 2021 survey. That’s why we commissioned a research project called Women’s Rights and Representation in the Music Industry. The findings showed that women are still underrepresented in the music sector, and urgent action is needed to address this issue. One of the recommendations from the research was to focus on women-related matters in the industry, and we’re proud to be part of this empowering initiative with Basadi in Music Awards. Our upcoming workshop aims to provide women in the music industry with the tools, knowledge, and support they need to succeed in their careers. We’re committed to creating an environment that promotes equal opportunities, fair representation, and gender diversity. Our ultimate goal is to drive lasting change and empower women in music. Their talents and contributions should be recognised and celebrated on an equal footing.”

BIMA CEO Hloni Modise: “The Basadi in Music Awards are dedicated to recognising and celebrating the achievements of women in the music industry as well as providing empowerment opportunities for women in music. The songwriter’s workshop is one of the many empowering initiatives aimed at supporting emerging female talent. It is a unique opportunity to learn from the panellists and the acclaimed Msaki, a BasadiInMusicAwards22 nominee, to receive feedback and to engage in critical and creative discussions.”
