WOMan Radio, the pioneering all-female digital radio station founded by legendary humanitarian and the “Princess of Africa,” Yvonne Chaka Chaka, is celebrating its sixth anniversary since its historic first broadcast on 20 October 2020.
Launched as a bold movement to advance social justice and equity for women and girls, the station has grown from an ambitious digital startup into a powerhouse broadcasting platform boasting over 60 000 monthly listeners across the globe. Run entirely by women—from technicians and content producers to management and on-air talent—Woman Radio has successfully redefined the landscape of traditional media.
Since hitting the digital airwaves on 20 October, Woman Radio has refused to shy away from complex realities. The station’s programming spans across 10+ tailored shows and podcasts tackling topics often sidelined by mainstream media, including gender-based violence (GBV), LGBTQ+ advocacy, financial literacy, youth development, and marginalised worker rights.
“When we took to the airwaves six years ago on the 20th of October, we had a simple yet profound vision; to amplify the stories of African women and give them ownership of their own power and purpose. Today, we aren’t just a radio station; we are a movement. We have proven that when you empower women in the media, you change the narrative for the entire continent.” Founder and CEO Yvonne Chaka Chaka said.

From its broadcasting headquarters in Sandton, the station has expanded its international digital footprint significantly, drawing regular streaming audiences through the official Woman Radio App across South Africa, the wider African continent, and major global cities including London and New York.
“When we started WoMan Radio online, people said it wouldn’t work in South Africa because data is too expensive and traditional radio dominates. But we proved them wrong. New media gives us the freedom to control our own narratives without gatekeepers, and despite the data challenges, our listeners keep coming back because they see themselves in our stories. Thriving for six years shows that when content is authentic and empowering, people will always find a way to tune in.” Yvonne Chaka Chaka added.
