Knee replacement isn’t the only option, and it’s one many South Africans can’t afford

When a specialist told 53-year-old Bhekumuzi Miya he needed a knee replacement, the surgery was the less frightening part. The bigger worry was what it would cost him, in hospital fees, time off work and a long recovery.

His orthopaedic surgeon, Dr G.H. Bayes, took a different route: a cortisone injection for the inflammation, then a single Monovisc injection, given in the rooms. Monovisc is a hyaluronic acid viscosupplement distributed in South Africa by Anstem Medical. In June, Mr Miya finished his 20th Comrades Marathon without knee pain.

His case raises a bigger question for your audience: how many South Africans with osteoarthritis are offered surgery as the only option, and what would it mean if they could avoid hospital costs altogether?

Dr Bayes can speak to who this treatment suits and who it doesn’t, and Mr Miya can share his experience. The press release is attached for background.

Would either of them suit a segment or feature on [publication/programme]?
