The Professional Educators’ Union (PEU) will celebrate its 120-year legacy with its annual PEU Extravaganza, bringing members and their families from across South Africa together for a day of sport,culture, talent, networking and wellness.
Taking place on 19 September 2026 from 09:00 at Milner High School in Klerksdorp, the event will bring together PEU members from all nine provinces to celebrate not only the Union’s long history, but also the people who continue to form part of its journey.
The PEU Extravaganza is a annual sport and cultural event that dates back to when the organisation was known as TUATA. The event was created to bring PEU members, their families and supporters together outside the workplace and create an opportunity to celebrate unity, culture, talent and wellness.
The programme will include a range of sporting and cultural activities, including soccer, netball, darts, volleyball, pool, chess, music and an Education Symposium. Members will also take part in the Mr Mrs PEU pageant, while the cultural component will give members an opportunity to wear and showcase traditional outfits representing their different cultures.
More than simply a recreational event, the Extravaganza provides an opportunity for PEU members to connect, network and strengthen relationships across provinces and generations. As PEU marks 120 years, the Union says one of its greatest contributions to educators has been giving teachers a collective voice and standing up for their rights and dignity in the workplace since its establishment in 1906.
Over the years, PEU has also played a role in supporting the professional growth and development of teachers, recognising that educators require not only representation but also opportunities to grow within their profession.
Reflecting on the lessons that PEU’s 120-year history can offer the future of education, the Union highlights unity, resilience, adaptability and strong leadership as some of the key values that have carried the organisation forward.
PEU also recognises the importance of building an inclusive union that embraces younger generations of educators and responds to a changing education environment. As technology continues to transform the world of work and education, PEU is embracing innovation and technology to ensure that it remains relevant to the changing needs of teachers.
However, despite the progress made over the past 120 years, educators continue to face serious challenges.
One of the major concerns highlighted by PEU is the safety and security of teachers in schools, particularly the growing problem of violence affecting educators in different parts of the country.
The Union believes that protecting the rights, dignity and safety of educators must remain an important part of the conversation about the future of education in South Africa.
The 120 Years Extravaganza therefore comes at an important time for PEU. While the event celebrates the organisation’s history, it also creates an opportunity to look ahead and consider what is required to support educators in a changing education landscape.
With members from all nine provinces expected to attend, the celebration will serve as a reminder of the strength that comes from educators standing together while celebrating the diversity, culture and talent within the PEU family.
