Semi-Soet – Die Musiekblyspel opens to packed Teatro audiences

Semi-Soet – Die Musiekblyspel made its long-awaited debut at the Teatro at Montecasino this past weekend, with more than 7 500 theatregoers attending during the opening weekend. The production, starring Bobby van Jaarsveld and Anel Alexander in the lead roles, is the first Afrikaans production in more than ten years to be staged at the Teatro.

Among the audiences were many people seeing the musical for the first time, as well as several theatregoers who returned for a second time to experience this iconic musical on stage. The glamorous opening performance was attended by numerous well-known personalities, including Elandré, Bernice West, Karlien van Jaarsveld, Simoné Pretorius and Victor Matfield.

Internet personality and teacher Lerisha Storm gives the musical “1 000 out of 10”, while the singer Emil Paul says it is not a production you want to miss.

“The plot features several love stories interwoven with the ruthless world of business and boasts an original score that serves the story well, enabling the cast to fully showcase their dancing and acting abilities,” says renowned broadcaster Michael Abrahamson.

“I loved the costumes in the production, particularly the way bright colours were used. It almost immediately transports you back to the film,” writes Mizanne van Wyk from Maroela Media.

“The success of the opening weekend once again confirms that there is a strong demand for Afrikaans theatre on major stages. Every ticket purchased helps secure the future of Afrikaans musicals,” says Salet Smith, AfriForum Theatre Manager.

Tickets for Semi-Soet – Die Musiekblyspel are meanwhile selling out quickly. Some performances during the run are already up to 90% capacity, which means audiences have little time left to secure their bookings.

With a larger cast, new music, impressive visual elements and plenty of humour and romance, Semi-Soet – Die Musiekblyspel offers a theatrical experience for young and old alike.
