The MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Lebogang Maile, has expressed profound sadness at the passing of two young South African sports stars, Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams, and Luqobo Makwedini who is the former under 18 national rugby player.
The 25-year-old Adams was part of the Bafana Bafana squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while the 20-year-old Makwedini was now plying his trade in France where he passed on.
MEC Maile said:” South Africa has lost remarkable young sportsmen whose talents took them beyond the borders of South Africa, carrying the pride of the nation on their sleeves. Both Adams and Makwedini represented the very best of the future of our beloved South African sport, -football and rugby-, thereby inspiring many through their talent, dedication and commitment.
“Our heartfelt condolences go to the families, friends, teammates and the entire South African football and rugby fraternities. We pray and wish them strength and peace during this difficult period,” said MEC Maile.
