Roodepoort Theatre, in partnership with Music Mind Productions, is proud to announce Legends Live On, a landmark tribute concert taking place on 26 March 2026 at 19h00. Building on the Theatre’s acclaimed 45th Anniversary Celebration, where South African stars were honoured for their artistry and contribution to the nation’s cultural fabric, this new production continues our mission of preserving and celebrating South Africa’s musical heritage.
This special evening will pay tribute to David Mabaso, the last surviving member of the iconic band The Big Dudes. Known for their groundbreaking collaborations with Brenda Fassie, The Big Dudes shaped the sound of South African pop music in the late 70s and 80s, creating music that united audiences across divides. Mabaso, affectionately called Mr Weekend Special for his unforgettable bass groove on the hit song, remains a living legend whose artistry deserves recognition on our stage.
Produced by Jacky Carpede, with Lebohang Pangwa and Michael Phillips as Musical Director, Legends Live On has been reimagined into a powerful two-set performance. The first half offers an intimate journey into Mabaso’s legacy, while the second set bridges past and present with a reimagined showcase of The Big Dudes’ timeless artistry.
At Roodepoort Theatre, we believe our role extends beyond hosting performances — we are a living archive of South African culture. Legends Live On is designed as a catalyst to ensure that the stories of our legends are preserved, celebrated, and passed on to future generations.
