Kwaito legend Doc Shebeleza has died in hospital at the age of 51.

The star, whose real name was Victor Bogopane, had been sick since June last year when he was first admitted to hospital.

Doc shot to fame in 1996 when his first album, S’Kumfete, came out on cassette. The album had hit songs like “Kum’nandi”, “Ebumnandini” and “Ghetsa Ghetsa” that had the whole country dancing.

He later formed the all-male group Amaskumfete, known for hits like “Tsipa Tsipa”.

In his later years, Doc spent time helping new artists through his organisation, Amaha.

His influence reached across generations. In 2014, rapper Cassper Nyovest showed respect to the legend by naming a hit song “Doc Shebeleza”.
