Legendary Sabelo Makhubo Returns to the Theatre Stage!

Sabelo Makhubo, a legendary actor and veteran theatre practitioner, is making his much-anticipated return to the theatre. Known for his iconic roles in popular South African television shows such as GenerationsThe LegacyZabalaza (as Lithebe), The QueenThe Wife, and Isibaya, Makhubo has become a beloved figure in the entertainment industry. Now, he is set to captivate audiences once again as the director of a brand-new stage play, Igwababa.

Alex Theatre Company and Academy in collaboration with KwaNyakaza Maphepha Productions and, Makhubo directs Igwababa, a powerful two-hander stage play that tells the story of love, fear, and the tragic consequences of silence. Written by Thembelihle Geqeza and Phumlani Dabula, this compelling production features a touching love story about a young woman named Mbali who connects with her high school sweetheart, Sifiso. Their relationship blossoms until the dark cloud of gender-based violence (GBV) begins to cast a shadow over their love.

As Sifiso’s tendencies toward violence surface, Mbali finds herself entangled in fear and confusion. The story takes a tragic turn when Sifiso, instead of seeking help or communicating openly, lashes out and kills a man who flirts with Mbali. His inability to speak up leads to devastating consequences—Sifiso ends up in prison, a fate that could have been avoided had he confronted his emotions instead of succumbing to fear.

Igwababa will be staged at Alex Theatre Company on 5th October 2024, with the show starting at 18:00.

“The play is a call to action, encouraging men to break the silence around their struggles, particularly in the context of relationships and family life.” Says Makhubo, Igwababa Director, “Today, in South Africa, GBVF has become a terrible social ill in our society. Through this play, we intend to encourage men to speak up and express themselves during hardships. We invite everyone to come experience this masterpiece.”

The cast of Igwababa includes Phumlani Dabula as Sifiso, Bulelwa Mabentsela as Mbali, and Lerato Magashoa as the stage manager.
