Race in the name of love this Valentine’s Day

Nothing gets the heart racing like romance and running, on 16 February 2024 you’ll get the chance to experience both. For the 35th time, lovers, runners, and running enthusiast will lace up their trainers and run for romance at the annual Randburg Harriers Valentine’s Day Fun Run, in partnership with South Africa’s leading fibre network operator, Vuma, and ISP partner Accelerit.

Join a team of thousands for a heart-pounding 10km night run around Randburg. Open to anyone from 15 years old and upwards, the race is a chance to celebrate the spirit of love, camaraderie and community.

Buwi Moeketsi, spokesperson for the Randburg Harriers Running Club, says, “Whether you’re a seasoned runner or just looking for a fun family outing, this promises to be an evening you won’t soon forget.”

Founded in July 1982, Randburg Harriers Running Club prides itself on being a family-orientated running club. They offer a variety of amenities and facilities to their members including a clubhouse, training programmes, and organised races. The club frequently hosts social events and provides support and encouragement for runners of all levels. “Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced athlete, we offer a welcoming and inclusive community for all who love running,” says Moeketsi.

“New runners get access to great coaches and a team of experienced runners who offer great advice, and we introduce them to cool gadgets that help make their running experience a success, such as GPS watches, running shoes and clothes and necessary endurance supplements with nourishing benefits.”

Randburg Harriers also provides support and assistance, in terms of their Athletics Development Policy, for promising or established athletes who are underprivileged, financially disadvantaged or historically disadvantaged.

The Valentine’s Day Fun Run is sponsored by organisations of all sizes from small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) to large enterprises. All event proceeds will be donated to two charities that are beneficiaries of the club, namely Wandsworth School (previously Wiggles and Squiggles); a school for children with special educational needs, and the Ann Harding Cheshire Homes – established to assist those with physical disabilities.

Randburg Harriers is not just a running club but a beacon of hope for many in the community. It not only promotes physical fitness and well-being but also fosters a sense of unity and good fellowship among the participants. By organising such events, Randburg Harriers is able to make a tangible difference in the lives of those in need, creating a lasting impact on the community as a whole.

“Join us for a memorable evening of fitness, camaraderie, and community engagement as we come together to make a positive difference in Randburg. We want all attendees to add a dash of creativity to their night out. Dress up in your most enchanting outfits and let’s see who catches Cupid’s eye,” adds Moeketsi.

According to Lungelo Mabena, Head of Sales and Marketing at Accelerit, the need for cross-engagement in the corporate space is only going to become more necessary as time goes on. “We operate a company in the digital space, and that space leads to a sedentary lifestyle for many people. We want to help people understand that the digital space enhances their everyday lives, and physical exercise is just as important as the information, movies, and content they consume.”

Furthermore, while promoting both physical wellness and community unity, Mabena hopes that the collaboration with Randburg Harriers and Vuma will enhance engagement and contribute to the prosperity of the communities they serve.

Taylor Kwong, Marketing Manager at Vuma, emphasises the importance of supporting community focused initiatives and creating a strong sense of community pride. “We are passionate about our communities and love partnering with organisations who share that passion. By collaborating with Randburg Harriers, we’re able to leverage our resources and expertise to create impactful experiences that fosters unity, connections and address the needs of the community. Through our sponsorship, we aim to not only support the upcoming race but also provide world-class fibre internet to the running club with our Internet Service Provider partner Accelerit – this is a game changer. We will continue to work with the running club to uplift and empower the youth in the community in various ways.”
