The Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge concludes in style

As the sun set on the 120 team, three-week tournament, Discovery and the South African Football Association (SAFA) reflect favourably on the festival.

Deon Curtis, Senior Marketing Manager for Sponsorships at Discovery, says that the tournament was a success and lives were enriched – all in line with Discovery’s core purpose.

“This is such a meaningful, treasured tournament that genuinely means so much to so many, on and off field. The passion, determination and skill on display throughout the 23-day festival, was admirable. A heartly congratulations to all involved, you can certainly hold your head high.”

Kicking off the day’s finals, was RESA FC beating River Park FC 2 – 1 in the u17 category. Following that was Mito Stars FC who secured a 2 – 0 win over Diepkloof Ladies FC. The final match of the 2023 edition, commenced at 14h30 with the hotly contested Open mens final, with Dube Continental FC claiming the 2 – 0 win over Soweto Super United FC.

Renowned football player and a product of the tournament, Andile Dlamini attended the finals  emphasising its importance for participants – taking them off the streets, giving them a goal, a passion and reason for living.

“In addition, the prizemoney will provide welcomed relief for many breadwinners who played. Then there are the scouts out and about including myself. I was discovered at this very tournament – given more attention once I won the accolades. I would love to see more tournaments follow suit, treating the girl child equally. Seeing the ladies play here, makes me feel great – the younger girls  who are now watching in admiration, will follow in time. I know that the tournament will grow as the years go by – and I am excited for that.”

Thulani Hlatswayo, a supporter and ambassador of the tournament also attended the final games, saying he is proud to return to the field which opened doors for him and many others as a youngster.

“I congratulate this tournament for turning 20 –   It is also pleasing to  see ladies’ football on display – that goes to show that the festival has grown and is impacting more lives.  Banyana Banyana have done this country proud, and deservedly so have many fans, which goes to show that women’s football is growing in leaps and bounds and there is talent.

“I am an example of this tournament: It did so much for me, and I have no doubt that it is doing the same for hundreds of others. There is such talent at these levels, with many players deserving to make the next step up – and I wish them all the very best of luck for their promising future.”

Phil Mogodi, SAFA Johannesburg President, says he is humbled by the success of this tournament;

“When we launched, we promised the family of Mr Walter Sisulu, that this tournament would be for the youth. Adding our steadfast partner Discovery to the mix, and this tournament has exceeded our expectations. We started with 16 teams; we are now at 120. The number of players that have come through this tournament is exceptional, with many going on to represent the PSL, our national teams or play abroad. Providing opportunity, equal playing grounds and a platform to express your passion is what the Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge is about – and I thank all for making this happen.”
