The Ace Ntsoelengoe Stadium to host the 2023 Gauteng Sports Awards

The much-anticipated Gauteng Sports Awards 2022/23 will be held at the Ace Ntsoelengoe Stadium in Mohlakeng, near Randfontein at the Randwest Municipality on 18 November 2023.

The stadium is named after one of the greatest footballers the country has ever produced, Patrick Pule ‘Ace’ Ntsoelengoe, who died in 2006. The former Kaizer Chiefs star also played in the US and Canada alongside the likes of Pele. In October 2008 he was posthumously awarded the Order of iKhamaga, South Africa’s highest honour for people who excel in arts, culture, literature, music, journalism, and sport. He is also a recipient of the Gauteng Sports Awards Lifetime Achievement award. In 2003 he was inducted into the American Soccer Hall of Fame for his exploits in contributing to the rich history of the Sport in the country where he spent 11 seasons.

The awards ceremony in November is the crown moment to celebrate and recognize the achievements of Gauteng-based athletes, teams, officials, and media within the sports fraternity. Gauteng continues to produce a number of top athletes and teams that have done well for South African sport.

This year’s event is held under the theme “Enabling excellence, Inspiring the youth”, to recognize those adjudged to have excelled between 01 August 2022 and 31 July 2023.

A total of 57 finalists have been announced in the 20 categories including the most sought-after, Sports Personality of the Year where the winner stands to drive away with a brand-new car. It is the only category decided by public voting through sms.

The remaining categories bar the Lifetime Achievement, which will be chosen by the MEC, will be decided by an independent 7-member panel which includes several members of the media.

This year has seen the addition of a new category, the Sports Photographer of the Year, giving photographers a chance for an award.
