Making it as a female DJ in a male dominated industry

Over the last couple of years, there have been a steady stream of up-and-coming female DJs that are flying South Africa’s flag high on the local, regional and international music scene. However, many more female DJs are still needed across the country to address the imbalance when it comes to access to paying gigs and opportunities within this career for women compared to their male counterparts.

It is for this reason that South Africa’s number one vodka brand, Smirnoff 1818, launched the Shaya Ingoma female DJ search competition.

The Shaya Ingoma platform annually calls on all up-and-coming female DJs nationwide to enter the Smirnoff’s female DJ search. The competition also acts as a showcase of the tremendous amount of female DJ talent that Mzansi has been blessed with.

We would like to propose an interview with DJ Nomali, who was born with a natural ear for music, a love for beats and a passion for mixing. She is a female DJ from the Free state, currently based in the West of Johannesburg.

In the years, DJ Nomali surrounded herself with like-minded people and people who would inspire her. She would attend events which she wanted to play at and study what and how the DJs would play so that she could go home and perfect her craft.

DJ Nomali has also played alongside the likes of DJ Fresh and Rabs Vhawufi to name a few.

She lives by the quote “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some com compassion, some humour and some style”

DJ Nomali can speak about the challenges of making it in this male dominated industry, her experience and how it has shaped her into the woman she is today, what inspired her and what keeps her going.
