RISE: The Siya Kolisi Story’ WINS at The Tribeca Film Festival!

“Rise” – The Siya Kolisi Story has won the audience award at the international Tribeca Film Festival in New York.

Written and directed by Africa’ most decorated director Tebogo Malope, the film tells the story of rugby sensation Siyamthanda “Siya” Kolisi from his upbringing in Gqeberha, his foundation at Grey College and how he has conquered the world of sports, while also shining the light on his shadow side and how he overcame loss and faced his demons. Kolisi—who made history in 2018 as the first Black man to be made captain of the South African Springboks—said he was “truly honored” to have the opportunity to share his story.

“We have won the biggest award – the audience award for best doccie film. We were also the only fully African film showcased at the festival and we are thrilled we won. As a director, I am very particular and intentional with the stories I get to tell and there was nothing I wanted more than to tell Siya’s story in the manner in which we told it. “

“I hope my journey inspires people to chase their dreams and reminds others to never allow adverse circumstances to define our lives,” he said. “We are more than products of our environments and we have the potential to change our respective narratives. Our win at Tribeca is very important to me and my team and we are excited about how far this film travels across the world and maybe make it to the academy.” concluded Kolisi.

Malope is known for his work on Queen Sono – the first African superhero film, directing music videos, work for Amazon and various Netflix productions. He is currently working on an NBA film alongside former U.S President Barack Obama and hip hop sensation J Cole.

The win comes fresh after Kolisi was bestowed the National Order of Ikhamanga by the South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa.

The doccie was produced by Jon Day and Michael Yormack of RocNation as Executive Producer.
