Engen Knockout Challenge Ambassador, Mark Mayambela, says the opening day of the Cape Town leg of the 2023 Engen Knockout Challenge was a clear sign of what was to come in the next two days of the tournament.
The former Cape Town City star, who is now heading the club’s youth team was speaking from the Langa Sports Stadium where the tournament is currently taking place with a total of 32 clubs, equally divided between Boys (U18) and Ladies (U20).
Mayambela, who won the tournament last year and narrowly lost to Kaizer Chiefs at the finals of the Engen Champ of Champs said the quality of youth football in the Western Cape is on the rise and thanks to Engen, such talent is given a platform to shine and express itself.
“The gap between the so-called smaller teams and well established clubs is getting smaller and we can see that through the competitiveness of the tournament. The platform that these players are getting, competing against the best talent in and around Cape Town, will see them growing into better players and improve their confidence. This is thanks to Engen’s investment in youth football development and it will continue to bear fruit” said Mayambela.
